An Abuja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced
an 18-year-old student, Shola Kolawole, of Jikoko Village, Mpape, in the
Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to three weeks imprisonment for stealing two
windows and a door.
The magistrate, Hauwa Aliyu, sentenced Mr. Kolawole
after he pleaded guilty to the offence and did not give him an option of fine.
“I needed money to pay my school fees and change my
school uniform that is why I stole the door and windows.
“I asked my parents to give me money but they said
they don’t have. My father has many wives and children; he can barely cater for
all of us.
“I didn’t know where to go to, have mercy on me I
won’t do it again,” the secondary school student said.
The Magistrate, however, said the sentence was to
serve as a deterrent to him and others who might want to engage in a similar
act.
Earlier, the prosecuting police, Musa Abdulahi, told
the court that one Stella Chikezie of Ajegunle Area of Mpape, reported the case
at the Mpape police station on February 5.
Mr. Abdulahi said the convict went into the
complainant’s house and the stole items.
He said that Kolawole was apprehended by some
security guards while he attempted to flee the scene of the crime.
The prosecutor added that the offence contravened
section 288 of the Penal Code.
