The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde
Fashola, commissioned the 2.1 km Ejigbo-Ajao Link Road in Ejigbo Local Council
Development Area, just as he named the two bridges on the road as “January 27
Link Bridge” in memory of the victims of the 2002 Ikeja bomb blast.
The Governor led guests on January 27, 2014,
Monday, to observe a minute silence in honour of over 1,000 victims of the
horrible incident, exactly 12 years ago.
He said such a tragedy in the Oke-Afa canal was
avoidable if the authorities in charge had been alive to their
responsibilities.
“... The National Government led by the Peoples
Democratic Party failed to do its duties. There is no other excuse for it. That
was their responsibility to manage bombs and explosives and to look after the
Nigerian military, but they dropped the bombs.
“Since then, they have pretended as if nothing
was wrong.”
Gov. Fashola lamented, saying the incident
prompted his government to intervene by rebuilding the schools and hospitals
located within the Ikeja Cantonment which were destroyed by the incident.
“My predecessor promised you that day that a
bridge will be built to link Ejigbo to Ajao Estate. I have come here today to
fulfil that promise,” he affirmed.
The Governor further blasted the Federal
Government for turning a blind eye to roads in the area, which, according to
him, were damaged by the activities of tankers lifting fuel from the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation’s depot in Ejigbo.
“It shows the kind of respect and concern that
the party that manages the Federal Government has for you, they will come back
to you and ask for votes,” Gov. Fashola stated.
